My best guess is that factory is receiving coolant in concentrated form (not mixed) and it's being diluted to 50/50 with the local water supply that hasn't been distilled.

Today BASF answered my question as to what the goo clogging the heater core could be. See below. The BASF plant in Ludwigshafen is the world's largest chemical factory and probably the biggest antifreeze maker. Most OEM stuff actually comes from them.

Roughly translated, they can't say anything definite without an analysis. They do however suspect the goo to be created within the heater core itself, the cause being "residual assisting substances used in manufacturing" that react and subsequently deposit the reaction product on the colder outlet side of the heater core.
They recommend exchanging the heater core and using coolant Glysantin G64, which was made in particular for preventing such deposits.
Alternatively the regular formulation, being Glysantin G30 can be used, but G64 was especially made for protecting from such deposits.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / With kind regards

Btw, I have G30 (violet colour) in my car, and will use their advice and switch to G64.

    Very impressive that BASF responded!

I completed a short survey on the Glysantin website and got a email back from BASF:

In your feedback on our website you commented on the availability of GLYSANTIN® in the USA.

We do not market our products in the USA, there we have a licenced partner Valvoline who market the products under the Zerex Brand

    Best regards / herzliche Grüße

I had no idea that Zerex was actually Glysantin and they responded to my survey in less than 24 hours. Pretty impressive.

Thats how business works in these parts!

It might be good to find out, if that US source markets G64 or equivalent in the Americas.

Just chiming in with another positive on the new heater core. Ambient temp was around 38F out. The engine was still warming up on the way to work this morning and was at 168F (per my scangauge). I got stopped at a light and had the fan fairly high. By the time the light turned green, the coolant temp had dropped to 164F. This NEVER has happened before with the OE heater core. No matter how cold it was, and how much the heat was blasting it never actually cooled off the engine.

Its really just night and day different. There is so much more heat available now than before.

I just got back from a trip to Mexico helping out at an orphanage there. I hope to get to testing the heater core gunk this week!

So, still no testing done on the gunk from the old core. The new core is working beautifully. It was 14F this morning and I had heat within a mile thanks to my block heater.

In other news, I just got an email from Valvoline after all this time with an update.

We recommend the use of our Zerex Super Cleaner product, part number ZXC02 for your application. This is our strongest cooling system cleaning product.

So, for those of you having this issue, I'd suggest trying out Zerex Super Cleaner. Its about $15 off amazon, and that would be way cheaper and easier than ripping the dash apart.

Hmmm...not sure what to do here. I'd like to give this stuff a chance...but I'm only a few thousand miles away from my warranty ending. I'm paranoid about dealers using any excuse to deny a warranty claim...so I'm almost afraid to try something on my own at this point. I think I'm just going to push them for a new heater core and see what happens.

I would get the new core if you're under warranty for sure. There is no guarantee that this cleaner will even work.

Here's hoping that your dealer takes care of it.
