hmm.. unlike most people here, I had no idea that the guy's "thing" was ragging on various cars. Had I known so beforehand, I might not have considered him to be such a jack@ss.

Reliability? Last time I looked in Consumers the Mirage reliability was rated better than the Spark, and much better than the Smart and Fiat.Originally Posted by MetroMPG;67034}
But he has no reason to question the Mirage's reliability as his very last point. (Actually he questions [I
And quite honestly, I think it looks better than all of them.
( PBS Motorweek loved the look of the Spark....I think it's hideous )

Yeah maybe they'd sell 42000 in 2 days? Gas prices are high enough up where I am. Check out Vancouvers prices! Attachment 11504
I agree with reviews not caring or mentioning obvious reliability issues when reviewing cars. It seems most think that cheap=unreliable.

They are "warning" us that gas prices in Vancouver will be the highest ever by this summer. It took them a little over 10 years of slowly weaseling prices back up after the GFC until finally reaching this point. Forget about the fact that oil prices are about half of what they were at the time. Production costs are up. Just don't ask anyone for specific details of what those costs are compared to what they were in 2007-08 because you will get crickets.

Strange, my car has a steering wheel lock, and I think I have what is literally the oldest car in this forum. I have the pushbutton start as well.
You can hear the lock disengage when you push the button. There's an electromechanical sound coming from inside the steering column.

Same with every 2015 and 2017 we have at work, no steering wheel lock. We have keys not push to start.

sorry to necro this a bit; but this review is actually one of the things that really 'sold' me that I was on the right track when leaning towards this car. Every 'negative' thing he mentioned is something I loved! I actually want to go over his attacks one by one and WHY I loved them.
attack 1 - the car does not change much year to year.
First, this is incorrect, but, its actually comforting. When I grew up, family members had cars with names like Corolla, Caprice, Sonata, and Escort. I really like that I can still go out and buy a Corolla or a Sonata today, even if the cars have changed a great deal in the ensuing decades, and am quite sad I can no longer get a new Escort or Caprice.
attack 2 - the car feels like it belongs in the 90s.
good. Call me a grumpy old man, but I don't really see the point in many of the "features" added since then. I'm all for safety, and will happy sign up for lane assist and kia-style blind spot cameras, but infotainment? To put it in a semi-joking way, in my day information and entertainment were separate and that's how we liked it!
3 - its "cheap"
good. I like cheap. my chair? cheap. my bed? cheap. my oven? cheap. my computer? well actually that wasn't cheap, it was given to me for free as a gift.
4 - underpowered
Also good. Why do I need 1337 horsepower, 69 cylinders. I don't. Wasteful. I need enough to drive safely, and this car can do that.
5 - 0 to 60 in 11.7 seconds.
I had a 1997 ford escort. I once ended up on a totally empty bypass route. So, I decided to floor it. Got to 100kph in about 13.5-14 seconds; which actually matches the paper time of said car. 11.7 seconds in speedy in my book.
want to stop here to remind everyone that so far, he's sold me on 5 points. He's said 5 things he thinks are attacks, but all 5 have made me think better of the car. I like that it does not change much. I like that its 90's. I like that it's cheap. I like that its underpowered. I like that its "Slow".
6 - see the ground through the engine
Again, the last car I had was an escort, and my family had cars older than that. This was normal. Frankly, it bothers me a bit that this is no longer normal.
7 - wheel lock
Okay. So I almost cried once in my car (97 escort), and the reason was that dang lock. Not only does the wheel lock, but, if the wheel is turned too far, you can't put the key in. So I ended up in a situation where I did not know either of these and thought the car was broken. eventually I figured out I could turn the wheel just enough to get the key in and everything was fine; but good god. that was a moment of terror I'll remember forever.
8 - ceiling lights
Most of the cars I've been in have either had 1 light, or, had more that never got used.
9 - 2 speakers
why do I need more? Sure it'd be nice if I could hook up my podcasts to the car, but if I cant, no big deal.
10 - no cruise control
okay. Doug finally hit on something that does not make me want the car more. I'd like cruise control in my car.
Again, to stop. We have 9 times Doug has thought he's made me want the car less, but he's actually made me want the car more, and only once when he's actually done what he intended, made me want the car less. Frankly, not only do I like the things he's noting, but I kinda like the fact he does not like it. Don't get me wrong, I love his videos. Only found them a week or two ago, but I've been binging them. He is great at what he does, but he also clearly has different taste in cars than I do. If I wanted a youtuber with similar taste in cars, I'd go to Robert Dunn's Aging Wheels. He always gets the most awesome cute little cars like a Trabant and a robin reliant.
I won't go point my point from here on in, as, I think I've made my point. There are a few things that he points out that I would actually like in a car; things like a centre console or a rear camera or red coloured door locks - some of these concerns have since been dealt with, if not all of them. The one thing that does annoy me is the speedometer; there really isn't a reason for it to go so high. The rear seat being a bench was also a selling point, but I understand that's no longer true. However, I do like that it does not have this built in plastic console in the middle like the spark has. There were a few times when I was stressed I'd lie down in the rear seats of my ford escort, and I'd like to be able to do that in my new car without plastic poking me. It's things he mentions, like visible seat rails, that remind me of my old car, that really convince me that he's just become addicted to new-style cars, and does not like it cause its "ugly" rather than it being actually good/bad.
in the end, my mind is drawn to a review by some canadian newspaper, that summed it up best. The mirage is "one unit of car". I want one unit of car. I want the mirage.
