Engine blanket ftw.
Don't let dealers know about it or they'll make it some crazy expensive dealer add-on item at purchase.

I swung by the local home improvement store the other day and picked up some of this stuff. It is 5/16" thick.
I then checked out the car, and stuck it to the front edge of the hood.
This did virtually nothing to close the gap. I unfortunately installed the weather stripping in an area that was a bit recessed. It looks good, but it doesn't help. Also, 5/16" is not NEARLY thick enough to close up that gap. I should have measured before I just went out and bought something. Oh well. This was the thickest stuff they had at the store too. I guess I'll have to order something online.
I did learn that a 5ft length is just about perfect.

Alright, I found out the hard way that the 5/16" stuff isn't nearly enough. So, what is a guy to do? Measure it of course! So, I measured my gaps the other day with a piece of dough. Yes, dough. I made up a piece (flour and water), and put it in the hood opening to get smashed like a home made piece of plastigauge. Then I let it freeze. This is what resulted. The narrowest area is 3/4" thick. So, I need a gasket seal that is at the very least 3/4" thick. Ideally, I'd like thicker so it actually deforms and seals a little better.
Who knew cooking could be so much fun!
The bulge in the middle top is from the piece of weather stripping I already stuffed in there. So, I'm going to take it out as its doing nothing. But, I think the step up on the bottom is where I'll stick the new weather stripping. I just have to find some stuff that is 3/4" thick at least.

Daox- think you could 3d print up a clip-on 'sweep' that extends the hood a little bit and lays over the bumper cover? Do you know what I mean? Just a flap that clips to the hood edge.

It is a possibility. You'll notice they did add holes that look like they might be for clips to hold in weather stripping. However, I think a rubber type gasket is a much better solution. It will form to the contours and seal much better than a plastic strip.
